Default organ donation

Would you donate a kidney to just anyone??? How about a lobe of your liver?

Of what significance would this person have to be for you to help them like this?

How about bone marrow? To what person would you donate this?

If a friend needed your blood for an emergency surgery (and you were the same type) would you drop what you were doing and get stuck in the arm?

My answers:

My blood, I'd give to probably anyone. Why? Because I've god damn good blood =D
But no--It's just very expendable.

I would give my bone marrow to one of my good friends or extended relatives if I didn't have some grievance against them. And besides, it replaces itself.

A kidney or liver portion would only be available to my immediate family: Mom, Dad, bro. (and perhaps my best friend if I knew whether we were the same type).

What about you?

In the case of a child, I would as well (I just forgot that scenario). In the case of a partner, it would have to be my fiancee or wife.

I think there are fewer of any one type of organ donation than blood donation (100,000+ on organ donation waiting lists!), and the operations for liver and kidney donation don't seem terribly risky, so I would offer my organs more readily than my blood. I'm not picky about who the recipient must be, so I guess I get pretty generous with my organs, as long as it doesn't impair my own functionality much.

Bone marrow looks like a risky procedure, so I'd most likely donate only to a good friend or family member. It seems that the medical community reserves this for life threatening cases to begin with.

As for the blood, if I were the most immediately available source of compatible blood, I would readily donate it. However, I'm sure that under most circumstances, hospitals already have a sufficient stock of blood ready for transfusion, so unless there was some reason all of that were either gone or incompatible, I see no need to drop everything to give blood.

Blood has a limited shelf life, about 6 weeks, so there is never really enough blood around.
